Plasti-Dip: '11 Subaru Sti Sedan

I haven't posted a write-up here in a while... Finally found some time to sit down and put another one together. You'll definitely be seeing more activity from me in the near future but for now I figured I'd share something new I tried out recently that I've been working on doing for quite some time. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook (Check Sig), you've likely already seen this as I constantly update recent projects etc. but here's a more in-depth look at what went into this car along with a couple pics

Hope you all enjoy...

Year - 2011
Make - Subaru
Model - Sti
Color - Dark Gray Metallic
Dip Color - Anthracite Grey Metallic
Vinyl - Avery Dennison Gloss Black Metallic

Some may be familiar with the amount of work and time that goes into my vinyl wraps... with full disassembly/reassembly, coatings, material etc. they get a bit pricey. So, in the near future I'm hoping to offer PD as a cheaper alternative to color changes for those who don't have the desire or budget for a proper wrap.

The goal with this one was to really make it stand out in a unique way. Maintaining a clean look without going over the top and going wingless for a more "grown-up" look is what we went for. Using Gloss Black vinyl to accent the Matte Dip, I think it turned out great. Dipping the wheels gloss black just sealed the deal IMHO.

Here we go...

Before Pics:

Roof and mirror caps will be wrapped in Gloss Black Metallic

A look at the corners Before

Paint Protection Film needed to be removed

Wheels were dipped years ago, but wasn't applied correctly. A few areas still had Dip where it wasn't "peelable" because product was sprayed too thin the first time. This time around, we'll have plenty of coats on there to be able to remove it easily. Going Matte Black topped with Glossifier.

Chrome window trim was dipped years ago as well, but again wasn't applied thick enough. Wear and tear shows us in the pic below that the chrome is reappearing. This will be handled later on

Into the shop she goes for Prep:

Wing Removed. Much better already IMO

Antenna and Roof Rails removed for a flawless wrap

PPF, wax residue, and adhesive being removed here. Unfortunately, this film was custom-cut with a razor and the installer cut into the paint deeply in more than a few places

Vehicle was then foamed and left to dwell and strip the surface of oils etc. then refoamed and hand washed using the Two-Bucket Method. Deionized water was used for the entire wash to eliminate any chance of hard-water minerals etching into the clear coat

Out came the Clay Bar to Decontaminate the paint and ensure the cleanest/smoothest surface prior to vinyl wrapping or plastidip'ing.
Before

After a section of the hood, very little contamination was picked up. This vehicle was "buffed" recently, so not many contaminates remained, but still a step that will not be overlooked at Diamond Detail

Vinyl layed down and tucked

Sti Decal added and wrapped

Everything masked off and ready for some 'Dip

Gunmetal Base layed down and dried

Anthracite Grey topper drying

I was anxious to see the color so we pulled it out in the Sun to get some close-ups and see the Metallic pop!

PD definitely feels very unique but as for the texture... I think the pics below will help answer that

Proper masking in tight areas where trim, headlights etc. meet is crucial to the final product

Chrome window trim was resprayed black and came out great

Here she is

Last but not least was taking care of the wheels

Remounted and torqued to spec. Stock lug nuts were replaced with Gloss Black to completed the wheels

Mudflaps reinstalled and she's all buttoned up

One last thing...

Nice Work. Are you just spraying this in the shop? I had to get green taged by the city and have a spray booth to spray solvents as a business

Great work as always Elijah, your attention to detail is second to none. The STI looks amazing. Really changing my view on PD.
